May 19th Worship Program

Welcome to Church!

We are glad to have you worship with us today. It's a true blessing to worship, pray, and serve with friends and neighbors.

Today, as we continue our study of the book of Acts, the account of the birth of the Church, we celebrate the power behind all the Church has done, the Holy Spirit. It’s appropriate as this Sunday we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, the coming of the Spirit for the disciples in the upper room. Today we are confronted with the question - “Does the Spirit still call and send?” If so, Who? Where? How?

Gathering for worship services is an important part of our life as disciples of Jesus as well as a Global Methodist Church. We understand that God invites his people into three discipleship practices. First, to worship passionately, where worship is more than the songs we sing, it’s about the lives we live, for His glory. Second, God calls us to love extravagantly; to love like Jesus who modeled sacrificial love in his life and in his death. Third, God equips us to witness boldly; to tell others about what he has done and is doing in and through his people.  We believe living out these three are essential for us as His church here in Rock Hall.

Thank you for being a part of our church family today. My prayer is that our time together in worship would be a source of inspiration, reflection, and connection in your relationship with Jesus. If you have any questions or want to discuss your faith journey, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. My office telephone is 410-639-2144, or send me an email.

Benediction

Life is much more than an accident. Wherever I go, I believe God needs me there. Wherever I am, I trust God has put me there. He has a purpose for me being there -

Christ, alive in me, wants to do something through me, no matter where I am.

I believe this and go in His grace and His love and His power.

If you would like someone to pray with you, please come and meet one of our ministry leaders at the end of the service.

Message Notes

Acts 31: A Spirit Led Church

Acts 13:1-13

Until now, Jerusalem has been the center of ministry, and Peter has been the key apostle. But from this point on, the ministry center of the growign church moves to Antioch with Paul as the new leader. The Spirit of God was growing the church to the ends of the earth by the spreading of the good news.

A Spirit Led Mission

Set apart for the Holy Spirit --- for the Work of God

Acts 13:1–2 (NIV)

Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul.  While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

Sent by the Holy Spirit --- to proclaim the Word of God

Acts 13:3–5 (NIV)

So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.  When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper.

Filled with the Holy Spirit --- to be a Witness to those who Hear

Acts 13:6–12 (NIV)

They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus, who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, “You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”

Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

Spirit filled disciples are disciples on mission.

A Spirit led church - is a church on mission.

Take Home:

  1. How can we cultivate an environment in our church where the Holy Spirit's presence and guidance are actively sought after? (John 14:26)

  2. What are some practical steps we can take as individuals to be more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives? (Galatians 5:16-18)

  3. In what ways does the Holy Spirit empower us to overcome opposition and obstacles in our journey of faith? (Acts 1:8)
